Mosquito Season Is Here!

Shay Runion, VP HR & Professional Development

The good news is, flowers are blooming, the days are getting longer and it is finally getting warmer.  The bad news is, that means mosquito season is right around the corner.  Experts are predicting huge populations of the dreaded menace this year and given the warm winter we experienced, we have already seen infestations in some areas.

While mosquitoes are most known for the painful, itchy welts they leave behind, this tiny pest may also pose a big health risk.   They can spread diseases like West Nile Virus and Encephalitis and infect your family pet with heartworms.

To protect your family and pets, Arrow has put together some simple steps you can take:

  • Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.  If you do go outside, be sure to wear mosquito repellant containing DEET.
  • Eliminate all standing water around your home.  This includes wading pools, birdbaths, flower pots and clogged gutters. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and can develop from egg to adult in as little as 10 days.
  • Cut back shrubs and other foliage where mosquitoes nest.
  • Keep your swimming pool covered when not in use.
  • Make sure all your windows and doors have screens that are in good repair to keep mosquitoes outside where they belong.
  • Use yellow bulbs in outdoor fixtures which are less attractive to flying insects.

We hope these tips will help you and your family enjoy a mosquito-free spring and summer this year.
