Arrow Exterminators Encourages Homeowners to Avoid Potentially Lethal Scorpion Stings

When it comes to the battle against summer's most notorious pests, Phoenix homeowners can easily claim that they're the bravest warriors in the United States. While many experience the familiar bite or sting of mosquitoes and bees, residents in Phoenix must avoid the menacing scorpion. Arrow Exterminators encourages Phoenix residents to learn about this potentially dangerous pest and take the necessary steps to prevent scorpions from entering the home.

"Around this time every year, we begin to notice an increase in service calls related to scorpions," said Shay Runion, Arrow Exterminators pest expert. "Scorpions are most active when temperatures are above 70 degrees and at night as they are nocturnal insects. Hot summer nights in Arizona provide perfect conditions for them to thrive."

Known for their painful and potentially life-threatening stings, scorpions can be found in a wide variety of habitats. While they are partial to climates above 70 degrees, scorpions prefer cool, moist areas during the day. They can most commonly be found under rocks, tree bark, doormats, patio furniture and wood/trash piles, as well as inside and around concrete block walls (essentially "apartments for scorpions). If they find a way to enter the home, scorpions can most likely be found hiding in dark areas, such as the insides of clothing and shoes, underneath furniture and rugs and inside of closets and garages.

To keep these dangerous pests from entering the home, Arrow Exterminators recommends implementing the following tips:

  • Seal gaps and openings between walls and doors;
  • Store firewood outside, stacked away from the home;
  • Keep window screens in good repair;
  • Keep grass closely mowed;
  • Keep tree branches and other plants cut back and away from the house;
  • Eliminate sources of standing water; and
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and/or on frames that allow them to stand above the ground.
