Arrow Exterminators encourages a new resolution for homeowners - a fresh, healthier life and home by preparing for a pest-free 2010

It's the New Year, which means it is time for a fresh start. It is also time to make New Year's resolutions. One resolution that should be on everyone's list is to take simple steps towards rodent control to keep a clean, pest free home in 2010.

Winter is a prime season for rodent infestations. In 2009, 24% of homeowners reported having some type of mice infestation, according to the National Pest Management Association. Rodents can pose health risks and cause serious structural damage to homes.

Roof rats in particular are known for chewing through walls and wires which can lead to fires and other structural damage. In addition, these same creatures that were infamous for spreading the bubonic plague many decades ago can still spread disease through their urine. Roof rats get their name from living in the upper part of buildings near the roof. They are also found under, in and around structures.

Mice are the other most popular rodents to enter homes during the wintertime. They breed very rapidly, producing up to a dozen mice every three weeks. They also can spread their droppings an estimated 70 times per day. These droppings can spread bacteria and viruses such as Hantavirus.

"Rodents are very serious problem for households, especially in the winter time," said Shay Jones Runion, Arrow's Pest Expert. "Not only do they cause damage to homes, they can easily spread disease. It is very important for all homeowners to be aware of this problem and take the necessary steps to prevent it."

Arrow Exterminators suggests taking these steps to prevent rodents from entering homes this winter:

  • Inspect wires, insulation and walls for any signs of gnaw marks, which may indicate an infestation.
  • Install gutters to channel water away from your home.
  • Seal cracks and holes, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home.
  • Keep tree branches, shrubbery and ground covering well trimmed and away from the house

Arrow protects homes from rodents with the STEPS® Total Protection System, an industry-leading process that utilizes Integrated Pest Management. STEPS includes a full inspection of home and property to pinpoint pest control issues; identification of not only the pest, but the true cause of the problem; and treatment in the most environmentally responsible way to alleviate current issues and help prevent any future recurrence.
