It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year Even For Pests Arrow Exterminators offers tips to prevent pests from spoiling the holiday fun

The holiday season is upon us-the tradition of decorating our homes, picking out the perfect tree, and digging the holiday decorations out from the attic or basement. But these annual festivities can often bring unwanted pests into your house or disrupt pests who have been nesting in the house undetected, making pest control a necessity during the holidays.

Common pests during this time of the year include mice, squirrels and other rodents who are known to hide in attics and basements where the holiday decorations are typically stored. The most common rodent is a house mouse, a pest that can breed very quickly and bring with them other pests like fleas, ticks, mites and lice. Besides being a nuisance, their droppings and urine can cause allergies in children and spread disease such as Hantavirus.

Additionally, brown recluse spiders pose a risk this holiday season as they can easily hitch a ride into homes on the family Christmas tree or from within a bundle of firewood. These spiders are often found living outdoors in dark areas around woodpiles. Mostly considered a nuisance, brown recluse spiders will bite if provoked, leaving behind painful, open sores.

"Although it can be funny in scenes from classic holiday movies, pests can quickly pose a problem and ruin the holiday festivities," said Shay Reunion, Arrow's pest expert. "Homeowners need to check their attics, basements, and garages for pests, as well as inspect their trees and holiday decorations thoroughly before bringing them into the house. Pest problems can often be avoided with a comprehensive evaluation."

To keep your home pest free this holiday season, Arrow Exterminators recommends some simple steps :

  • Seal all holes and cracks that are larger than the diameter of a pencil.
  • Keep garages, attics and basements clean and clutter free.
  • Store holiday decorations in sealed, plastic containers.
  • Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
  • Replace loose mortar and weather-stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • Inspect Christmas trees thoroughly before bringing them into the house.
  • Vacuum and sweep often around the home.
  • Store fire wood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground.
