Don't Let Pests Go Back-To-School Arrow Exterminators Urges Parents, Teachers and Students to Prepare for Potential Bed Bug, Ant and Flea Infestations
Can you hear that? It's an audible groan from kids across the country as they head back to school … It's officially time for tests, homework and after-school activities to resume.
At Arrow Exterminators, this is a time when we usually notice an increase in pest-related calls in public places, such as schools. It's a fact that when large amounts of people congregate in small areas, it's easier for pests to spread quickly.
Bed bugs, ants and fleas are a common sight in any elementary school or college. College students, in particular, need to be aware of the rise in bed bug infestations. We always warn college students not to buy second-hand furniture without inspecting it first. Often, students will pick up furniture found at a garage sale without realizing that it is infested with bed bugs. Look for bed bugs to be found in mattresses, suitcases, boxes and shoes. If you do notice or suspect a bed bug infestation, call a pest professional immediately.
Ants are another pest commonly found in schools. It only takes a few crumbs left in a backpack or unwrapped food forgotten in a locker for an infestation to spread. Ants are small and can enter schools through the cracks in a foundation. An easy way to prevent ant infestations is to thoroughly clean lunchboxes and backpacks daily. It's also important for food to be kept in airtight containers or plastic bags.
Last, fleas can also make an appearance in schools and dorm rooms. Many of our customers are surprised to learn that fleas can be found in schools, but it's important to understand that they are excellent hitchhikers, jumping as high as eight inches vertically and 16 inches horizontally to catch a "free ride." Typically found on the family pet, fleas have been known to attach to any warm-blooded host, including humans. Fleas can leave behind itchy welts and have the potential to transfer diseases through their saliva. Keep fleas away by vacuuming carpets and floors often, and keeping pets groomed.
We hope these tips will be the beginning of a happy and pest free school year!
