How Rodents Can Affect Your Health

Rodent Threats:

Rodents (such as mice, rats, squirrels and chipmunks) can enter a home through almost any opening or crack. It is important to inspect for rodent droppings, especially in undisturbed areas such as pantries, under baseboards, in attics and along walls. Rodent droppings most often cause allergic reactions in human beings but can also cause disease, including the potentially deadly Hantavirus. More frequently though rodents serve as vectors, carrying bacteria (such as salmonella) on their bodies which can contaminate food sources, kitchen surfaces and equipment. Arrow's trained rat & rodent control professionals can offer the expertise and knowledge of rodent extermination to best protect your health and rid your home of a rodent infestation.

Below is additional information regarding some of the most common rodent infestations as well as prevention tips for homeowners to ward off these critters:

Mice & Rate Control

Mice & Rat Control

Mice and rats pose many threats to you, your family and your home. Micro droplets of mouse urine can cause allergies in children. They can also bring fleas, mites, ticks and lice into your home. Rats are known for the damage they cause by chewing on and through materials (i.e. wiring which can cause fires), urinating on food and eating stored foods. They also spread numerous diseases and secured their place in history by spreading the highly dangerous bubonic plaque.

Mice and rats can enter structures through very minute openings (mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel and rats through spaces the size of a quarter). Rats are excellent climbers and often enter a home in the fall when outside food sources become scarce. They can also be found under, in and around structures, such as in fields or wood piles.

Squirrel Control

Squirrel Control:

Squirrels usually enter homes in the late fall as the evening temperatures drop to look for warmth to nest for the winter. Their playful nature and early rising are what gives them away as homeowners either hear them scurrying around in the attic or coming and going at dawn.

Squirrels can do considerable damage to exterior trim and siding of a home as they widen a current hole or make a new hole in which to enter. Once in the home they can and will gnaw on electrical wiring possibly causing a short or a fire. Squirrels can also be carriers of fleas and other unwanted organisms that will infest the structure after they gain entry.

Raccoon Control

Raccoon Control:

Raccoons are basically nocturnal but will look for food during the day. They will engage in social behavior with other raccoons but they are usually thought of as being solitary. Raccoons will nest in attics or crawl spaces of structures.

Raccoons can carry rabies and roundworm. The roundworm can be contracted by someone not wearing breathing protection while cleaning the bathroom area of raccoons. Fleas and other parasites may be associated with raccoons nesting in the attic or crawlspace. They cause damage to structures when creating an entry into the attic or crawl space.

Chipmunk Control

Chipmunk Control:

Chipmunks nest in burrows that can be as long as 30 feet and there are no mounds because they carry the dirt away in their mouth. They will have one nesting chamber and several food storage chambers and several escape tunnels. Chipmunks are usually active during the early morning and late afternoon.

Their extensive burrowing can cause collapsed walls or slabs. They can also damage flower and vegetable gardens. When they tunnel next to a foundation and the tunnels flood due to heavy rains, the homeowner can experience water in the basement or other sub structure. Chipmunks can also get into buildings but it is rare.

Pest Proofing Prevention Tips:

There are a number of pest-proofing measures that homeowners can take to protect their home and families from the threats posed by rodents. Arrow's rodent control specialists recommend the following:

Mice, Rat, Squirrel & Rodent Control Prevention Tips:

  • Store boxes and containers off the floor and organize items often to prevent rodents from residing in undisturbed areas.
  • Seal cracks and holes, including areas where utilities and pipes enter the home.
  • Store food in thick metal or plastic containers with tight lids.
  • Clean up spilled food right away immediately and wash dishes and cooking utensils soon after use.
  • Keep outside cooking areas and grills clean.
  • Do not leave pet food or water bowls out overnight.
  • Keep bird feeders away from the house and use squirrel guards to limit access to the feeder by squirrels and other rodents.
  • Use a thick plastic or metal garbage can with a tight lid and keep sealed at all times.
  • Keep grains and animal feed in thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids. In the evening, return uneaten animal feed to containers with lids.

If you find rodent feces, hear sounds of scurrying in the walls or observe other signs of a rodent infestation, contact one of Arrow's licensed rodent control specialists to inspect and treat the pest problem.
