7 Bug-Themed Movies That Will Give You the Creepy-Crawlies

Halloween movies with witches, ghouls, and monsters usually get all the fun, but this year, it’s time for bugs to take the spine-tingling spotlight. If you’re on the hunt for a movie that will provide a few scares, look no further than our list that features bugs on the big screen.

  1. The Fly (1986)

The story of a scientist who accidentally merges his DNA with a housefly, The Fly merges the sci-fi and horror genres to make a truly creepy-crawly flick. As you watch Seth slowly take on the characteristics of a fly while trying to cure his condition, you’ll learn that thinking like a bug may not be the best way to get rid of them.

  1. The Mothman Prophecies (2002)

A town in West Virginia experiences disasters and frightening prophecies when its residents start seeing a moth-like creature. Is watching this supernatural horror movie in the dark giving you the creeps? You can try turning on the lights, but you may end up attracting a few moths of your own.

  1. Tremors (1990)

Worms have a reputation for being harmless, however, the ones in Tremors are anything but. When giant killer worms come from underground to wreak havoc on a small town, no step is safe. If you feel the ground move under your feet, it’s probably not a Graboid, but you should check for structural damage from termites.

  1. Men in Black (1997)

While the world of Men in Black features quite a few insect-themed aliens, none are more memorable than the giant alien cockroach. If typical Earth cockroaches make your skin crawl, imagine how Edgar feels when one from space literally gets under his skin. Thankfully, you won’t need a De-Atomizer to handle these pests, but if you find a few too many in your kitchen, it might be time to look into pest control.

  1. The Mist (2007)

A mysterious mist envelops a supermarket, trapping shoppers inside. For some, the low visibility isn’t a good enough reason to stay put, but when people realize mutant insects from another dimension are lurking out of sight, they hunker down. While giant praying mantises should be the least of your worries, the movie does serve as a chilling reminder to seal your home to prevent dangerous pests from getting in.

  1. Beetlejuice (1988)

Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice has more bug-like qualities than just his name. Much like the Deetz family, he becomes a bit of an unwanted pest for the ghostly Maitlands. While we like to think we have just as many creative tricks up our sleeve to reclaim your house as Beetlejuice, don’t count on us to roll out a haunted carnival.

  1. Mimic (1997)

Genetically engineered insects that can disguise themselves as humans are truly the stuff of nightmares. Mimic is a thriller that’ll have you questioning who’s real and who’s fake when the mutant bugs start attacking the residents of New York City. There aren’t any bugs that can camouflage this well, but some insects are pros at hiding in plain sight, so be sure to regularly check that your home is pest-free.
