The highest concentration of smokybrown cockroaches is in the southeastern U.S., as they prefer warm, humid areas. Outdoors, they are often found in plant debris and woodpiles. Near homes, they gravitate toward garages, garbage cans, the foundation, and anywhere food is stored.

Leaky roofs and standing water can draw them to your home because they like high humidity. Smokybrown cockroaches also are attracted by lights left on at night and will fly toward the source. Trash or pet food that’s left out will catch their attention while they’re looking for food sources.

Smoky brown cockroaches are able to bite but rarely do, instead preferring to run or fly away. The real danger comes from the potential diseases they can carry, such as pathogens and harmful bacteria. Because of the health risks that come with these roaches, it’s always recommended to get rid of an infestation, even though the bugs themselves rarely cause major issues.

To best way to prevent smokybrown cockroaches is by securely storing trash, food, and pet food inside your house. Turning off exterior lights will also limit roaches near your home. Establishing an outdoor perimeter with insecticide will help prevent cockroaches from getting inside. If roaches are in your home, use insect bait to eliminate them.
