How To Extinguish Fire Ants Before They Take Over

Spring is right around the corner. Before you know it, flowers will be blooming and birds will be chirping.

Unfortunately, it also means fire ants will be waking up.

If you’ve ever stepped on a mound of red imported fire ants, you know they don’t exactly believe in personal space. These aggressive ants are known for swarming and stinging, and they leave behind painful, itchy welts that can linger for days.

The good news? Early spring is the perfect time to get ahead of these painful pests.

Why Fire Ants Get Worse in Spring

Fire ants exit stage right during winter, but they don’t disappear for good. Colder temperatures push fire ants underground — sometimes over 10 feet below the surface — where they ride out the winter in a less active, dormant state.

But once soil temperatures warm up in early spring, colonies come back to life and start foraging for new food. Fresh mounds can pop up in your yard seemingly overnight. And within just a few days, your sidewalk or patio could be crawling with ants.

It’s also important to note that a single colony can contain hundreds of thousands of ants. Sometimes, colonies can even overlap in the same yard. Add on spring being a prime growth season, and it’s easy to see how your lawn can quickly turn into a fire ant explosion.

Fire Ant Prevention Tips

If you wait to see fire ant mounds in your yard, you’re already playing catch-up.

Early prevention is key because colonies are smaller and more concentrated, which makes them easier to deal with. There are a few simple steps you can take early in the season to reduce fire ant activity:

Start by regularly inspecting your yard for new mounds, especially after warm spells or heavy rain. Catching a mound while it’s still small makes it easier to treat.

Keep your lawn well-maintained. Regular mowing and trimming reduce ideal nesting areas and make it easier to spot ants before they can spread.

Minimize excess moisture where possible. Fire ants are drawn to consistent water sources, so eliminate standing water and avoid overwatering plants and flowers to make your yard less attractive.

Finally, avoid disturbing mounds unless you’re prepared to treat them properly. Kicking or flattening a mound without eliminating the colony can cause ants to relocate and spread.

The Reason DIY Treatments Can Fall Short

When it comes to DIY fire ant treatment, bait traps work best. But while over-the-counter solutions may work at first, they don’t always eliminate the entire colony.

It just takes one fire ant to rebuild a colony — the queen. As long as she’s around, you won’t be able to fully solve the problem on your own.

Fire ants are also highly defensive. Disturbing a mound without fully eliminating it can trigger aggressive swarming behavior, increasing the likelihood of stings. If you have children or pets, partial treatments can create more frustration than relief.

Effective fire ant control requires more than just surface-level treatment. You need a strategy designed to eliminate the colony at its source and monitor for new activity.

How Arrow Helps You Beat the Bite

Sometimes, it can be tricky to tell the difference between fire ants and red ants. It turns out that not all red ant species are fire ants, nor are all fire ants exclusively red. Behavior is the main way to tell the difference. If the ants in your yard are aggressive and swarm, then you likely have fire ants.

If you find a true fire ant mound on your property, it’s time to call in the pros. As part of our STEPS® Total Protection System™, we utilize a method of fire ant control aimed at eliminating the entire colony using the most environmentally responsible means available to achieve that goal.
