Protect Your Family from Termites, Nature's Most Costly Pest

Termites cause more than $5 billion in damage each year!  Here's how to stop them.

Termite damage on a door frame.Termites rank as one of the most destructive intruders that a homeowner can face. Termite cause more than $5 billion in property damage each year and the startling fact is this damage is rarely covered by homeowner’s insurance because it is considered preventable through proper termite protection. Now is the time of year when reproductive termites called swarmers emerge from their existing colonies in large numbers to form a new termite colony.

These swarms are often the first sign of a termite infestation. There can be a sense of panic when a person first notices signs of a termite infestation.  What are these bugs? Will they damage my home? How much damage have they already done and how much will this cost? Once a termite infestation begins, the damage can occur very quickly and can take years before evidence of their destruction becomes visible.

Know the Warning Signs of a Termite Infestation:

  • Thin, papery wings near window sills or floors
  • Mud tubs built by termites to connect them from the soil to their food source
  • Distorted areas of paint or wood surfaces which appear “bubbled” or cracked
  • Hollow-sounding wood

Termite Prevention Tips:

  • Eliminate moisture around foundations and divert water from the house by using proper downspouts and gutters
  • Remove old tree stumps in the yard and avoid excess piles of mulch since these can be a food source for termites
  • Reduce humidity in crawl spaces with proper ventilation
  • Have your home inspected annually by a licensed pest professional. If you have termite protection it is important to maintain your coverage and renew annually.
