Rodent Awareness Week

Take Precautionary Steps to Keep Rodents Out of Homes

It is that time of year when rodents start seeking food and shelter inside homes as the temperatures drop. Rodents such as mice, rats, and squirrels are more than a nuisance and to encourage awareness the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) created Rodent Awareness Week which is October 21-27 this year.

Some of the most common rodents in the southern United States include the House Mouse, Deer Mouse, Roof Rat, Norway Rat, and Squirrels. Once inside, these rodents can chew through cardboard, wood, and electrical wiring increasing the risk of house fires. What many people may not realize is that rodents can also carry and transmit diseases such as Hantavirus, Plague, Salmonellosis, and rat-bite fever. In fact, rats and mice are known to spread more than 35 diseases.

These pests are relentless when it comes to finding shelter during the fall and winter months, which is why Arrow Exterminators is encouraging the public to take precautionary steps to keep rodents out of homes. House mice only need an opening the size of a nickel to so thoroughly inspect your home and seal up any cracks or openings in the foundation or exterior walls. Use plastic boxes and containers with seal-tight lids for storage and keep them off the floor. Keep outside cooking areas and grills clean and do not leave pet food or water bowls out overnight. Also, be aware of rodent signs such as droppings, gnaw marks, noises, and damaged food packages.

If you are experiencing issues or suspect a rodent problem, you should contact a licensed pest control professional like Arrow Exterminators.
